Tiziano Vecellio Titian
Born – Pieve di Cadore, Italy c.1487
Died – Venice, Italy 1576
After an early training in a mosaicicit’s workshop, Titian came under the strong influence of Giorgione. After Giovanni Bellini’s death, he was appointed Painter to the Venetian Republic and was revered as highly as his southern contemporary, Michelangelo. Titian twice refused invitations to Rome, but at the age of sixty he agreed to spend eight months as a guest of the Vatican. In Rome he made the first version of Danae Receiving the Shower of Gold for the Pope’s grandson and eight years later he made this, the second version, for King Philip of Spain. That two powerful patrons had no qualms about an artist replicating the same subject matter and composition suggests that painting was now being judged on aesthetic grounds, not for its narrative content or interpretation. Ostensibly there is little difference between the two, but his painting technique is dramatically different – sharp outlines are replaced by softer brushstrokes. This picture epitomizes the Venetian High Renaissance style, characterized not by draughtsmanship but by the free handling of paint. Titian’s overriding contribution was his innovatory approach to subject matter and the oil medium. He extended the emotional range of his work through his warm, rich palette.
