Susan Rothenberg
Born – Buffalo, USA 1945
Susan Rothenberg’s paintings and prints occupy the space between abstraction and figuration. In the 1970s, she became known for her mostly monochrome series of horses. Through flattened forms and simplified outlines, she revealed an intrest in the mythic power of the equine form. In the 1980s, her archetypal imahes of horses gave way to various representations of the human figure. However, the introduction of the body, or its fragmented parts, was again symbolic, rather than specific or personal. There is an open-ended, unconscious element to much of Rotherenberg’s work, which accords perfectly with her own statement that, “most of my work is not run through a rational part of my brain”. Vertical Spin is from a series of twelve paintings Rothernberg made over a period of two and a half years. It features the upward flight of a dancer and attempts to pinpoint the actual positions of the body in time and space. Her later paintings, with their loose, painterly marks, reveal a Neo-Expressionist influence.
