Born – Edinburgh, Scotland 1924

Paolozzi is generally recognized as a sculptor belonging to the Pop Art movement in Britain. Born in Scotland of Italian parents, Paolozzi graduated from evening classes in Edinburgh to studying in London at St Martin’s School of Art and the Slade School. He finished in 1947 and for the next two years he came into contact with numerous notable artists. On returning to London he shared a studio with sculptor William Turnbull. From 1951 he undertook many public art commissions in Britain and abroad and taught textile design and sculpture, as well as in the ceramics department of the Royal College of Art. Paolozzi possesses diverse technical skills. These are reflected in his complex sculptural constructions, reliefs developed from eclectic sources and 2D works such as Wittgenstein in New York. In wood, plaster and on paper he continually recomposes and reorders shapes that have been created, altered and found. Marquette are reproduced on a large scale, often in bronze. They comprise a conglomeration of influences from Classicism to Construction, Cubism to Futurism, and are a mixture of the organic and the mechanical, the representational and the abstract.
