Richard Wilson
Born – London, England 1953
Richard Wilson studied at the London College of Printing from 1970-1971. He then went on to Hornsey College of Art. Since graduating with an MA from Reading University in 1976, he has exhibited his sculpture/instillation art with Matt’s Gallery in London. As a work that has a strong and lasting impact, Wilson’s 20:50 is unsurpassed. Not only does it physically completely occupy one of the spaces of the Saatchi Gallery where it is now installed, but it also disorientates the senses and has a strong odour. The layer of 2,500 gallons of used, black sump oil gives the illusion of great depth, not of viscous fluid but of emptiness falling away from beneath the feet. Edging gingerly along the walkway leading into the work one feels as if one is stepping into the void; it is almost a leap of faith. The notion of the paradox is a thematic element of Wilson’s work. The tenuous ways in which we live and manage our lives and the structures we create to house ourselves and our possessions – caravans, conservatories and greenhouses – and the importance we attach to them, are seen by Wilson as inventions worthy of exploration and transformation.
