Paolo Caliari Veronese
Born – Verona, Italy 1528
Died – Venice, Italy 1588
Veronese was brought up in Verona on the mainland territory of Venice, where he would first have experienced the Mannerist style, which had spread north through central Italy. He was particularly influenced by Titian, Raphael, Michelangelo and Parmigianino. At the age of twenty-five he painted the ceiling for Doge’s Palace in Venice, and by 1560 had made his first visit to Rome. In 1573, he produced his infamous and hedonistic Feat in the House of Levi, which he was forced to defend in front of the Inquisition. In Veronese’s assured historical, religious and allegorical paintings he seems to relish depicting large masses of people. In Family of Darius before Alexander the Great, the incident – in which Darius’ mother begs Alexander for mercy – is witnessed by figures peering over the balcony. Veronese’s real interest appears to be in the production of a splendidly coloured theatrical scene with a Palladian backdrop, rather than the dramatic nature of his heroic subject matter. Veronese was noted for his command of pageantry and drama and his brilliance as a colourist and here the remarkable warmth of his palette helps to convey the sense of a clear, bright day.
