Michael Andrews

Born – Norwich, England 1922

Died – London, England 1995

Michael Andrews studied at the Slade School of Art in London under Sir William Coldstream from 1949 until 1953 when he received the Rome scholarship in painting. After graduating, Andrews taught a number of key art schools in the capital and has been categorized within a group of artists, termed by R. B Kitajin 1976 as the School of London. The connection between them was their “education to the human form.” From 1975, Andrews made regular trips to Scotland. The rough, Glenartney landscape and grounds of Drummond Castle provided his subjects and the backdrop to his ideas. He left London for Norfolk in 1977, not returning to living in London until 1992. A second major landscape series resulted from his experience of Ayers Rock, Australia in 1983. Andrews associated with other London artists, such as Bacon, Fraud, Auebach and Kossoff, is reinforced by his paintings of The Colony Room, a club in Soho that was frequented by these artists and their acquaintances. In similar spirit, The Deer Park recalls the revellers featured in Norman Mailer’s novel of the same name. It is a dream-like disjointed image that Andrews produced at a pace. His later work is less painterly, mimicking screen printed, photographic and collaged imagery.
