Lisa Milroy
Born – Vancouver, Canada 1959
After studying at the Université de la Sorbonne, Paris (197701978), Lisa Milroy went on to develop her skills at St Martin’s School of Art and then Goldsmith’s College, London (1979-1982). Although, from Shoes, Milroy would seem to work within a still-life tradition of figurative painting, her concerns are more focused on the formal, abstract qualities of pictorial construction. Milroy is known for her large canvases featuring the representational depiction of multiple objects – tyres, shirts, lightbulbs, fans, etc. they are produced from the recollection of experience rather than photographic sources and reflect an interest in the notion of collecting, of arrangements and systems. The grid format has been retained in more recent paintings, based on Milroy’s travels abroad. Although these indicate a naturalistic approach to her interpretation of other worlds and other cultures, they are, in fact, evidence of her development of compositional structure. Her slick, colourful descriptions of window displays, landscapes and buildings elude specificity and detailed examinations. Their painterly eloquence is sufficiently evocative to goad us into believing otherwise.
