Born – Kutztown, USA 1958

Died – New York City, USA 1990

Keith Haring’s earliest artistic creations as a child came from television cartoons. His high-school education was followed by attendance at the Ivy School of Art in Pittsburgh and, from 1978, a year’s study at the New York School of Visual Arts. Among his teachers were experimental artist Keith Sonnier and conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth. In 1980, Haring eschewed more conventional outlets available to him to display his creativity and became a graffiti artist. He covered advertisements in the New York subway with stylized, marker pen and chalk drawings. His subjects were wide-ranging but had in common references to popular culture in a nuclear age. The strength of his graphic abilities, as shown by Untitled is contained in the linear element that dominated his complex images backed by saturated grounds. These have commercial rather than expressive roots, marking the transition of Haring’s art from subway to T-shirts, badges, murals, official adverts and posters throughout the materialist 1980s. His universal popular imagery derived from a variety of ethnic and cultural sources, without being applicable to one in particular.
