Born – Bleckede, Germany 1945

Jorg Immendorff is a leading German Neo-Expressionist whose artistic career began in 1961 – the same year as the Berlin Wall was constructed – with a solo exhibition in Bonn at the New Orleans Club. Beginning in 1964, he attended courses at the Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf, studying under Joseph Beuys, whose polemic and direction profoundly affected his artistic development. Immendorff’s social and political concerns marked the paintings he produced at the end of the 1960s, serialized by the nonsensical LIDL slogan, referring to the world of infancy. A more overtly political element overpinned the Café Deutschland paintings, which referred directly to the division of Germany and the increasing polarization of society. The motifs and harsh, satirical gestures in the German Expressionist art, seventy years before, provided Immendorff with inspiration. In Addition, his experience of the realism of Renato Guttuso’s Caffé Greco painting (1978) confirmed his approach to his subject. The high tonality, dark shadows and frenetic activity and imagery crammed into the pictorial space evoke anarchy, and menace. Immendorff opened the Café La Paloma in Hamburg in 1984, which became a reputable exhibiting venue.
