Born – Epsom, England 1903

Died – Fawley, England 1992

John Piper began his career as a clerk in his father’s firm of solicitors. After his father died in 1926, he studied at the Richmond School of Art, and then at the Royal College of Art in 1927. A member and secretary of the Seven and Five Society of artists. He exhibited abstract sculpture with the group from 1934. Piper helped to produce Axis, the review of abstract art, the editor of which, Myfanwy Evans, became Piper’s second wife in 1937. This pioneering publication attracted contributions from eminent art theorists, historians and avant-garde artists of the day. It, and associated papers, contributed to the rise of landscape art in the English tradition, taking into account recent European artistic developments, most notably Surrealism. Piper incorporated romanticism and nostalgia into his work, sharing in the spirit of work by Sutherland and Nash. Via his experimentation with collage, he returned to a representational mode of working. St Mary Port, Bristol is moody rather than naturalistic. This “neo-picturesque”, serene but sombre image of church ruins is a composite of numerous techniques and reveals Piper’s versatility. It also reflects his interest in architecture and his confirmed religious beliefs.
