Jean Arp
Born – Strasbourg, France 1887
Died – Basel, Switzerland 1966
Jean Arp, also known as Hans Arp, was a sculptor who also worked as a graphic artist, painter and writer. His wide-ranging interests allowed him to be involved with several of the most important movements of the first half of the twentieth century. These included exhibiting with Der Blaue Reiter artists – led by Marc, Kandinsky and Macke – and, after moving to Zurich in 1916, the Dada movement. Here, Arp’s interest in art’s potential for spontaneity found expression through his participation in the avant-garde happenings at the Cabaret Voltaire. During the 1920s and re-located in Paris, Arp started work on a series of painted wooden reliefs with his artist wife Sophie Täuber. These works, like Constellation According to the Laws of Chance shown here, were almost abstract, whilst at the same time quite clearly based on natural forms. The random nature of the pieces, with their poetic sensitivity, is characteristic of standing sculptures, drawings, tapestry, poetic and prose.
