Jacopo Tintoretto is thought to have studied briefly under Titian, the great Venetian master. In Venice in 1548, a year when Titian was out of the city, Tintoretto made his name with Miracle of Saint Mark Freeing the Slave, a fine example of a Mannerist painting with its vivid colouring, distorted figures and foreshortening. After this success, he began decorating the interiors of churches and scuole – that of Saint Rocco being his greatest achievement. His work was invariably completed with great speed, in part due to his large workshops in which he employed Marietta, his highly talented daughter. In order to construct his compositions he would set up a miniature stage in a box. Into this he would position maquettes, and experiment with artificial light to observe the play of shadow on form. In The Last Supper, a late painting, the central drama is almost perpendicular to the picture plane. There are numerous light sources, incidental characters and dramatic gestures, presenting an intense, chaotic and lively scene. In his desire to capture the thrill and excitement of this spiritual occasion he has used dark tones punctuated by the odd patch of bright colour.
