Born – Bresden, Germany 1932

Gerhard Richter first worked as a painter of stage sets and then as an advertising designer, among other jobs. He studied as a painter in Dresden and Dusseldorf until the early 1960s, when his paintings were mainly figurative. In 1962, he produced a series of blurred, indistinct paintings based on photographic images from newspapers and magazines. Always concerned with the narrow distinction between photography and painting, Richter’s work constantly operates on the borderline – whether between abstraction and figuration or between colour and monochrome. Tending to produce work in a series, Richter’s oeuvre includes minimalist abstractions of great emotional weight, such as Colour Streaks, 1968, and aerial photographs of cities transformed by expressionistic brushstrokes into abstract paintings such as the Townscape series, 1968-1973. Since the late 1970s, he has produced a number of huge canvases such as Abstraktes Bild that, through their virtuoso technique and distanced subject matter, explore the role of the artist. A versatile and surprising painter, Richter’s consistent ability to reinvent the medium poses important questions about the nature and value of painting in our time.
