Cy Twombly is an original talent whose independent spirit and vision has formulated an art that is definable neither by style nor artistic movement. He spent from 1948 to 1952 training at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Students League in New York and finally, at the invitation of his peer and friend Robert Rauschenberg, at Black Mountain College. Here he was taught by Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. He travelled with Rauschenberg and moved to Rome in 1957, leaving only for short periods to work in New York. His early work reflected the influence of those around him. The open, expansive gestures of the Abstract Expressionists appealed to him, particularly the graphic elements in the work of Kline. However, unlike his contemporaries, popular culture did not interest him as a subject worthy of artistic exploration. He looked instead to the classical art of the Renaissance, Greek mythology and Roman antiquity. His mature paintings reflected these interests without offering descriptive references to form or narrative. As Nini’s Painting shows, his artistic language is formulated from a wide vocabulary of pencil lines, paint marks and chalk scribbles to create a rich, multi-layered image, full of vital energy and cryptic symbols.
