Andy Warhol

Born – Pittsburgh, USA 1928

Died – New York City, USA 1987

Andy Warhol is the most famous of the American Pop artists. He was a legend in his own lifetime and remains a cult figure, more because of the persona he manufactured than because of the artistic merit of his ideas. The notion of mass production is at the heart of Warhol’s work – even that of the human icons of popular culture. Having grown up in a generation where anything and everything became freely available on the open market, the multiple-item-stacked drugstore shelves became Warhol’s visual resource. He studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1945-1049 and then moved to New York. He had various jobs including that of illustrator, window display designer and commercial artists, he received the Art Directors Club Medal in 1952 and 1957 for his advertising art. From 1960, Warhol’s interest in film making and in silkscreen printing collided with his exploration of popular culture and consumer items. From Coca Cola bottles and Elizabeth Taylor to Campbell’s soup cans and the Electric Chair, such icons were mechanically reproduced in series with colour variations – as in the case of Mao.
