Aelbert Cuyp
Born – Dordrecht, Netherlands 1620
Died – Dordrecht, Netherlands 1691
There were six or seven painters in the Cuyp family, although Aelbert Cuyp was the most original and accomplished. He was influenced by earlier Dutch landscape painters, in particular van Goyen. Cuyp never visited Italy himself, but it is likely he learned from Dutch painters such as Jan Both who had been there before. From these painters Cuyp revealed the influence of Claude and became known as the Dutch Claude. By the 1640s, Cuyp was producing much larger canvases in which he showed an interest in different effects of light at various times of the day. He painted a wide range of subjects, including portraits, still life, landscapes and town scenes, but is best known for portraying cows shown grouped on the lowlands or simply chewing the cud. Dordrecht, Evening is one of the many paintings that Cuyp made of the watery landscape in and around his native town. Cuyp’s work was much admired in the nineteenth century by the English artists Constable and Turner.
