Azza Abbaro

Being a child of the 80s, I feel that the biggest contribution to mankind my generation has made is the idea of buying faded and/or torn jeans. Only in the 21st century could there be such a blatant contradiction as the idea of being "hobo chic".

I like hot brownies with cold lemonade and tom petty, I hate politics and eggs. My first love is anything to do with films or theatre. Before the age of 20 I moved from country to country 7 times (mostly around the Middle East), and I therefore consider myself a "citizen of the world". I will forever be too Arab for "westerners" and too "western" for Arabs.

My influences run from deserts (and desserts!) to Johnny Depp.

I like my art to be anonymous, and as you can tell I can't spell if my life depended on it. I like there to be definite answers in other peoples work but I strive for complete ambiguity in mine. I like capturing a complete raw moment and rendering it as best I can (for me, this explains the nudity). I like hearing other people's interpretations of my work to see how much they differ from mine and why.

My internal nature is to complicate everything, so with art I try to do the exact opposite. I like to simplify and stay away from politics, hidden meanings, and themes that need to be overanalyzed. What you see is what you get, and what you wish to derive from it is up to you. There are no wrong or right answers with my work, only ones that are closer to my "truth" than others. For the most part, my intention is to create something that is as visually pleasing as it is ambiguous. I want what people deduce from the works to tell them something about themselves, rather than something about me.

I have an inexplicable ability to make others see the bright side of everything but save all the pessimism for myself. If I see a spider I will kill it, and I wish I could have met Andy Warhol.
